The new Resident Evil does it quite simply. It's a story-driven action-adventure that tries to take what worked best from its popular predecessors, but at the same time tries to wrap it all up with completely new ideas that, at first glance, seem like they don't really belong in the series. The Louisiana home of the Baker family from the seventh episode has been replaced by a half-empty village somewhere in Europe. In its immediate vicinity you will also find the castle of the Dimitrescu family, which in more ways than one evokes, for example, Spencer's mansion from the first part. However, there are other locations too, including mines, a factory or a small area with a water dam. It is definitely a quite unique setting for the series, although it won't dazzle you with its originality; what interests you more is the atmosphere that individual locations exude.
In a half-empty village, you are not being chased by hordes of the undead, but by werewolves, witches and other fantastic monsters. There are at best a few dozen of them, but moments of silence will occur often and you will never really know when the next firefight and fight for your life will begin. So you feel like something is watching you all the time and you often have the urge to look behind you. Throw in the fact that the main story revolves primarily around the main character's family, so on paper it's something that the previous installments never really tried to do, and you're in for either a total screw-up that will turn die-hard fans off… Or something that moves Resident Evil, as we know it, is a step further. The developers thus took on an ambitious project that could be described as a big risk. But in this case, one thing is true - risk is profit.
