Vito Scaletta is an Italian emigrant who moves to America as a child. In order to support the family, the father starts toiling in the docks from morning to night and drinking at night. And because Vitto doesn't want to end up like him, he follows the path that his friend Joe will show him. He steals and robs in the dark, which, as a greenhorn with milk on his chin, can bring him nothing but trouble with the law. And to avoid prison, he joins the US Army and heads back to Sicily to fight in World War II. Years later, he returns for a month's vacation to Empire Bay, the town where he grew up and where his family lives. But she has a hard time recovering from the death of her indebted father. Thanks to Joe, Vitto avoids going back to war and instead turns the wheels of crime again. To help his mother and sister and also a little himself.

• Interactive film in the positive sense of the word
If I wanted to describe the story of Mafia 2, I would fill the article space for several days in advance. Probably no one expected that the plot would not have a plot, the script and dialogues are the best part of the whole game. Mafia 2 is more of an interactive movie than a game, but in a positive way. No empty video sequences, but well-thought-out situations that turn even the most ordinary business of Vito and Joe into an event. Not once do you expect that the conversation between the two main characters is just empty chatter.

Every sentence and every word is carefully thought out and, in my experience, it is by far the best approximation of the game to cinematic art. In addition, the plot is much more realistic than in the first part, where the life of the mafia was embellished. For most of the time, Vitto and Joe are two poor thieves caught up in a game beyond their abilities. Mafia 2 is not full of originality in terms of story, but we love all those clichés. Distraction can also be found in two great chapters that take place completely somewhere else than in Empire Bay. And more... but I'd rather not, I won't say more.

The backdrops of the city of Empire Bay add the final straw to the excellent film processing. I haven't seen such a detailed environment in a long time. In addition, the stylishness of the forties and fifties oozes from him like blood from the throats of slain mobsters. The first ride literally took my breath away. If I had to compare again with the last GTA IV, Mafia 2 is the clear winner in this field. So it's clear that the cinematography we all loved in the first installment is even better. The long development time and maniacal attention to detail in all audiovisual and screenwriting areas paid off.

• However, the same cannot be said about the gameplay
I didn't expect a city full of options to go crazy, nor did I want dozens of side mini-games, but Mafia 2 not only basically doesn't offer any of those, it also lacks gameplay within the story line. The first half in particular has a frustratingly slow pace. Most of the fifteen chapters start with Vito waking up and picking up the phone. You arrange a meeting and move to a pub or to see a friend. You will then agree on a plan and drive again. Either an action follows, or another animation and conversation, and again moving four rounds. If you add to this that the mission from the distillery, which we know from the demo version, is the most difficult in the first half of the game and the shootout is the longest in it, the summary is clear.

Not only does the basic retail version on PC lack game content for distraction, but it doesn't even get it in the plot itself. The story is dissolved by tens of minutes spent in the car. In it, all you have to do is listen to the interesting but constantly repeating news and music from the radio, or have conversations with your partners. But they are not so talkative that their company will make your long moments behind the wheel more pleasant.

And once you reach your destination, the action in the first half of the game is very short or limited to dull fistfights. With limited punch options, you'll enjoy them once or twice, but then it's a necessary evil. Light and heavy punches can be used and chained into a simple combo. However, with the third boxer comes the need to cover and use counterattacks. This basically means you hide behind your fists, let your opponent swing twice in the air, and slam into them once. You repeat the series about five times and then finish him off with three strong blows.
